If you were hoping to get a base model M6 and easily swap the SSD like on the M4, the teardown brings bad news:
1️⃣ No more modular SSD daughterboard: Unlike the M4's plug-and-play design, solderless upgrades are no longer possible.
2️⃣ Back to soldered NAND pads: The logic board has unpopulated BGA pads, meaning an upgrade requires adding both NAND chips and missing support circuitry (resistors/capacitors).
3️⃣ Extreme modding barrier: No more simple swap. We're officially back to the hardcore era of hot air rework, reballing, and Apple Configurator DFU restores.
Whether this was driven by internal airflow or cost, you'll definitely want to spec your storage wisely at checkout.
